Obituary John Garratt.

It is with great sadness that I have to write this. John and Pat have been close friends of mine since I started my adventure in Dexters in 1988. Pat was a founder member of the N.E. Dexter Group and John has always supported her in all things Dexters.

Although the Butterbox herd is in Pats name, John was always very involved in the Dexters and they showed & promoted Dexters in the north of England in rare breed classes before there was any dedicated classes for Dexters. Always willing to give help and advice John was responsible for many of the earlier DCS leaflets and was chairman of our group for many years. John & Pat moved down to Sussex 15yrs ago to be near to Pats mother and transported all the Butterbox herd with them.

To Pat and all her family we send our sincere condolences.

Ann Gates.

Calf show November 2014.

Our calf show was once again by invitation of the Aberdeen Angus Northern Group at Thirsk Auction Centre in November each year.

We had an excellent turn out for our Judge Steve Adcock and Myrtle Sunley was our steward for the day, and kept things running nicely.

Our show next year will once again be in Nov and the date when available will be on our website. Even if you never intend to show, this is a nice place to get your calves use to being handled and transported always a plus if you intend to sell them or just come as a spectator and enjoy catching up with other dexter members.

I would like to express our thanks to Steve for judging and Myrtle for stewarding and all the exhibitors who took time out to attend and make it a good day for promoting dexters.

October 2014 Herd Visit at Eagleridge Dexters.
The next event was the Eagleridge Dexter herd visit on the 26th Oct and Vet talk on BVD held at Kirby Misperton village hall . We had a nice turn out and I think everyone found Helen the vets talk on BVD very interesting as is was accompanied by an excellent slide show and Helen is a very good speaker so I think everyone went home with some food for thought. I should like to thank Christine Barnes who shared the cake baking and serving tea’s and coffee making and washing up with me, I know everyone enjoyed our refreshments as there was not much left.

Herd visits at Huddersfield July 2014.
Our outside first event of the year was a herd visit hosted by the Booth and Sykes family over at Huddersfield and the weather was very kind to us, as it was a lovely day.
We started our visit at John & Gail Booth’s with coffee and biscuits and eventually when everyone had arrived went of to view their herd. They have been very interested in dun dexters and have some very nice examples. I’m not sure who was the most interesting, the human visitors or the cattle but they where all very tame and curious as to why all these people had descended on them.

After viewing John & Gales Brookelean Herd of dexters we moved on to view Sheila & Jennifer Sykes Hillgrove herd. Geoff Harrison led the way, on a very scenic route to Hillgrove farm and on the way we stopped of to view two young bulls and a group of steers who all looked very happy in a field with wonderful views for us all to enjoy.

We then moved on to the farm to see the rest of Sheila & Jennifer’s dexters.
They have a nice mixture of shorts and non shorts and all the cattle were very interested in viewing this group of visitors.

The Sykes and Harrison families had kindly put on a BBQ for us all complete with dexter Beef burgers, of course which went down very well with everyone
As Sheila and Geoff had kindly provided lunch for us all, we had a collection for charity and Sheila’s choice was for M.S and the total came to the grand sum of £177.00
Sheila and Geoff thank everyone for their generosity.

After lunch we had a demonstration by Amy Harrison on how to prepare an animal for show or sale, as it really does make a difference in the prices when nicely prepared animals are sold at the rare breed sales.
Steve Adcock a DCS judge then gave a talk on points to look for when choosing a animal to show.

In all, a very enjoyable day.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to making the day a success.

AGM 2014.
2014 kicked of with our AGM at the Anchor Inn at Whixley, this seems to be proving to be a popular venue as once again we had a good turn out with 32 members and 2 guests.
Myrtle Sunley decided after 10 years to resign from her post as treasurer.
We will miss Myrtle as she has done an excellent job as treasure,
however we are very lucky in replacing her with
Pip Le Cornu who I know will keep us and our accounts in order.
In appreciation of Myrtles commitment to the
group over the last ten years we presented her
with a bronze cow and calf, which you can see from
the photo she was delighted.
